Frequently asked questions about First Aid and BHV courses

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about our courses, certification, locations and costs.

General

What is the difference between First Aid and BHV?

First Aid (EHBO) focuses on providing first aid in medical incidents. BHV (in-house emergency response) is broader: in addition to first aid, it also covers firefighting and evacuation. BHV is a legal requirement for employers; First Aid is not, but it is strongly recommended.

In which cities do you offer courses?

Classroom courses from The Hague. We deliver in-company training throughout the Netherlands, with a focus on the Randstad: The Hague, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Leiden, Delft, Zoetermeer, Haarlem, Eindhoven, Breda, Tilburg and Groningen.

Are your certificates nationally recognised?

Yes. Our First Aid courses lead to the official Red Cross First Aid certificate. BHV courses conclude with the NIBHV certificate. Both are nationally recognised and accepted by employers and government.

BHV (in-house emergency response)

Is BHV a legal requirement?

Yes. Under Article 15 of the Dutch Working Conditions Act (Arbowet), every employer must have enough emergency response officers (BHV officers). This applies from the very first employee.

How many BHV officers does my company need?

The number is determined by the RI&E (risk inventory and evaluation). Rule of thumb: at least 1 BHV officer per 50 employees, and always at least 1 present during working hours. More may be needed for high-risk work.

How long is a BHV certificate valid?

A BHV certificate is valid for one year. After that, a refresher course is required to stay certified.

How long does a BHV course take?

The basic BHV course takes 1 or 2 days, depending on the format you choose. The annual refresher course takes half a day to a full day.

First Aid

How long does a First Aid course take?

The standard First Aid course takes around 16 hours, usually spread over 3 to 4 sessions. Short modules and refresher courses are also available.

How long is a First Aid certificate valid?

A Red Cross First Aid certificate is valid for 2 years. A refresher course of a few hours keeps your certificate active.

Does my health insurance cover a First Aid course?

Many supplementary health insurance policies reimburse (part of) the cost of a First Aid course. Check your policy terms or contact your insurer.

What will I learn in a Child First Aid course?

Techniques aimed specifically at children (0-8 years): child CPR and AED, choking, bandaging techniques for children, recognising anaphylaxis, febrile seizures and stop-the-bleed. In line with IKK and KCKZ guidelines.
