First Aid and BHV courses that give you the confidence to act

BHV (in-house emergency response) is mandatory under the Dutch Working Conditions Act (Arbowet). Every employer must ensure there are enough trained BHV officers who can act in an emergency. This means companies have to train their employees and draw up an adequate BHV plan.

Any employee can become a BHV officer, regardless of their role. The person must be physically and mentally able to act in an emergency. Employers often choose staff who handle stress well and are willing to take responsibility.

A BHV officer must be able to: - Provide first aid: basic first aid, CPR, using an AED. - Fight fires: use the right extinguishing equipment. - Evacuate: evacuate people safely and coordinate the evacuation. - Raise the alarm: call the emergency services and manage the situation until they arrive.

A standard First Aid course usually takes 4 to 8 hours. There are also refresher courses of 2 to 4 hours. The exact duration varies per course and training provider.

An ambulance driver needs an advanced First Aid certificate, for example from the Red Cross or a recognised life-saving skills (Levensreddend Handelen) programme. In addition, they follow further training focused on medical assistance and patient transport.

You learn life-saving skills such as CPR and using an AED, recognising emergencies such as cardiac arrest or allergic reactions, and how to give first aid for wounds and injuries.

A First Aid certificate is valid for two years. After that you need to take a refresher course to keep your certificate.

If your certificate has expired, you need to take the full First Aid course again. You can only take a refresher course with a valid certificate.

No, since 2023 VCA is no longer covered by the STAP subsidy. The costs are usually reimbursed by the employer.

After the exam you usually receive the provisional result within 24 hours. You usually receive the official certificate within 5 working days. First Aid and BHV certificates are often issued immediately or shortly after the course.
